Community Driven
This festival is created by and for you: the community. This is a not-for-profit event and we run the festival collectively. All attendees volunteer to make this trip happen, for example by joining the cooking team, or helping get people to their courses on time.
-
Climbing
We will be climbing in the beautiful Peak District, where you can undertake instructor-led workshops, organised social climbing, or climb independently. We can support you in finding a belay partner if required.
-
Other Activities
On top of all things climbing – bouldering, top roping, sport climbing, trad climbing – keep an eye out for everything from movement workshops, stalls and hikes to open mics, panels and movie nights. Take some quiet time with a book in our chill-out area, hire a bike to get in some more sightseeing, or sign up for a buddy to chat with throughout the festival. This is your space to explore, rest and enjoy.

Instructor/Provider: Ashok Sakhardande
Instructor/Provider bio: After climbing for fun in the UK and around the world for over a decade, I once asked my boss if I could take the young people I worked with out climbing. Finding out that required qualifications and was a viable career started the journey into becoming an outdoors instructor. I am excited to now have the opportunity to share some skills with the Wanderers of Colour community as I know first hand what the lack of diversity in outdoor spaces looks and feels like. Alongside training as a Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, I am also training as a Clinical Psychologist. I hope to one day combine my interest in mental health and outdoors adventures. @abovelandandsea (IG)

Bio: Anita (she/her) has an innate ability to bring calmness to people who are having a bad day, this is the session for you if you might be in need of a boost. She started climbing at 36, and a year later, she was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. She has since represented GB Climbing as part of the Paraclimbing Team, winning medals in International World Cups and World Paraclimbing Championships. She also works as a coach, specialising in inclusion. To Anita, climbing is a place where you can socialise and meet people and a sport where age and fitness don’t matter.

Trad climbing with Ashok Sakhardande
-
Cost: Free
Date: Friday and Saturday
Duration: Full day
Capacity: 3
Description: There is no instruction on social sessions, this is simply a chance to climb together with Ashok Sakhardande.
Prerequisites: You will need to be a confident trad climber with experience of gear placement, and leading and belaying trad routes. No minimum grade required.
Bio: After climbing for fun in the UK and around the world for over a decade, Ashok (he/him) once asked his boss if he could take the young people he worked with out climbing….”Finding out that required qualifications and was a viable career started the journey into becoming an outdoors instructor. I am excited to now have the opportunity to share some skills with the Wanderers of Colour community as I know first hand what the lack of diversity in outdoor spaces looks and feels like. Alongside training as a Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, I am also training as a Clinical Psychologist. I hope to one day combine my interest in mental health and outdoors adventures.”
Independent Climbing
Independent climbing is for compentent climbers.
There will be many climbers coming to this festival who are comfortable choosing where to climb and have their own transport.
If you are looking for a partner to climb with that day, please let one of the facilitators know before the breakfast briefing so we can include this in the day’s announcements. There will also be social activities from the first evening to support you in finding climbing buddies.
We ask that everyone climbing independently is a competent outdoors climber, is honest about their competence and that everyone makes sure to do all the necessary gear and safety checks before commencing every climb. While we are happy helping you find someone to climb with, both parties remain responsible for their own and each other’s safety and wellbeing.

Location
The Wanderers of Colour Climbing Festival takes place in the beautiful Peak District. The Peak District is cited as one of the birthplaces of recreational climbing and has some of Europe's most challenging and well-loved rock climbing routes, such as the globally renowned Stanage Edge near Sheffield and the Roaches in the Staffordshire Moorlands. Many of the UK’s best climbers locate themselves near here for access to the gritstone.
Accommodation
We have hired Thorpe Farm Bunkhouses exclusively for our group. Address: Thorpe Farm, Hathersage, Hope Valley S32 1EG (Google Maps)
This facility has hostel/bunkhouse style beds (mixed gender and single gender) and outdoor camping
Rooms sleep between 4-12 people
All mattresses are provided with a sheet, pillow and pillowcase. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN DUVET / SLEEPING BAG
If you’re camping and need a tent, Alpkit have kindly offered some 1-3 person tents for you to borrow. You’ll be able to book these with your ticket
Each of the four bunkhouses has its own toilets and showers (mixed gender and single gender facilities) as well as a sitting/dining area and a kitchen (with electric cookers, fridge/freezer space, kettle, toaster, pans, cutlery and double sink) available for limited use outside of communal meal preparation times
One of the bunkhouses has wheelchair accessible toilets and showers. You can make a note of your needs when booking your ticket.
A drying room with washing machine and tumble dryer is available in one of the bunkhouses
Wifi available (expect poor signal)
We will clean up after ourselves and leave the facility as we met it. This is achieved through everyone taking up a volunteer role which are allocated when you book your ticket
The accommodations are in a traditional style, featuring older furnishings and features. Please be aware that while comfortable, the facilities reflect their age and historic character
Please note that all accommodation is shared, your belongings are your own responsibility. We take no responsibility for your belongings.
Transport
-
Getting to Thorpe Farm Bunkhouses options:
Driving/liftshare.
Taking the train to Hathersage or Bamford station plus a shuttle or taxi to the hostel.
Taking the train to Sheffield and getting a taxi to the hostel (about a 25 minute drive).
You will be responsible for organising your own travel, but we support attendees with:
Coordinating lift sharing and taxi sharing (through a shared spreadsheet via the WhatsApp group)
Shuttle from Hathersage or Bamford station to the hostel (we will have a minibus which you can be picked up in for a small fee)
Please aim for a 7pm arrival on Thursday so that you don’t miss out on the activities of the evening. Do not arrive before 7pm unless you have volunteered to help out.
-
During the Festival there will be shuttle buses and car lift shares to take you to the crags in the morning, and to return you to the hostel at the end of the day.
-
We encourage lift sharing to help reduce our impact to the environment and the crags.
If you drive please let us know on the sign up form so we can make sure we have enough parking spaces.
If you drive please let us know on the sign up form. If you are planning on driving and are able to offer lifts to other attendees, we will be arranging lift sharing via a shared spreadsheet.
We are also looking for drivers to support us with transportation when we are at the festival, for example driving to the climbing locations. Please indicate in the registration form if this interests you. You will be reimbursed for your petrol costs if you volunteer to support with driving.
-
The nearest stations to Thorpe Farm Bunkhouses are Hathersage and Bamford, both less than 10 mins drive away, or about half an hour walk. You can also get a train to Sheffield and take a taxi to the hostel. We strongly recommend booking trains 6 weeks in advance to keep costs down. As an example, London-Sheffield train tickets (advanced single and fixed times) booked 6 weeks in advance cost approximately £70 in total there and back. Trains Sheffield-Hathersage/Bamford are around £5-6 single.
-
Please note that if you have a fully funded bursary ticket, we can reimburse you up to £100 for travel, so keep your receipts and book well in advance!
We hope to create an inclusive and accessible environment for all participants and are committed to accommodating the diverse needs of our attendees. Below are the key aspects of our approach to ensure accessibility throughout the event.
Accessibility
-
The Byre - Ground Floor Accessibility
The Byre is part of the Old Shippon building and offers ground-floor accommodation, suitable for up to 14 guests. This area is accessible through a separate outside entrance with a ramp, although the entrance ramp may present challenges for individuals navigating alone due to a weatherboard. The Byre includes:
- A kitchen and living area that is accessible by wheelchair.
- Bathroom with two toilets, two showers and two sinks. Suitable for people with mobility issues including wheelchairs (please call for more details).
General Accommodation Details
The main kitchen and sitting area in the Old Shippon are accessible via seven stone steps, which may be a barrier for guests using wheelchairs.
The ground surrounding the accommodation is concrete so is navigable via wheelchair however it is slightly uneven and not fully tarmacked, adding an additional element to consider for those with mobility aids.
If you have any more queries please contact us.
-
Free Entry for Carers
At our festival, we recognise and appreciate the vital role that carers play. We are pleased to offer free entry for carers accompanying guests who require assistance. This full ticket includes the same access to the festival, including food and all other benefits, ensuring carers can enjoy the festival experience alongside those they are assisting. There are however limited tickets. Please contact us before Thursday 23 May 2024 to enquire about this ticket.
Booking Process
To manage accommodations and capacity effectively, we ask that carers and their guests apply for tickets early. This process helps us ensure that we have adequate space and resources available for everyone. If you get in touch with the team we will provide reservation codes to guarantee your place, along with a booking code for the carer's free entry.
Important Dates
Please note that the application deadline for a carer ticket is 23rd May. This ensures that all arrangements are made well in advance. We strongly encourage you to apply early to facilitate the best possible experience.
Additional Information
In the unlikely event that a carer's free ticket is booked without a corresponding paid guest ticket, our team will follow up to confirm details and ensure that all attendees are accommodated appropriately.
For further details on the application process, accommodations, or any other inquiries, please feel free to contact us at wanderersofcolour@gmail.com

We provide a well-being/prayer room accessible to all attendees. This will be a nice chill out space if you wish to take a break from the main activities or find a quiet space to chill, pray, or meditate.
